Irish Cinema Shines with Stellar Nominations for 2025 IFTA Awards

The Irish film industry is set to celebrate its remarkable achievements at the 22nd annual Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) awards, scheduled to take place on February 14 at Dublin’s Royal Convention Centre. Leading the pack this year are two standout productions: the semi-fictionalized comedy biopic Kneecap and the TV series Say Nothing. These works have garnered an impressive number of nominations, reflecting Ireland's growing influence in global storytelling.

Kneecap, a film that delves into the lives of Belfast-based Irish language rappers, has secured 17 nominations across various categories. Notably, it is in contention for Best Film and Director – Film. The trio behind the movie—Naoise Ó Caireallain, J.J. Ó Dochartaigh, and Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh—are nominated for Lead Actor – Film. Additionally, the film has earned nods for Script, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Cinematography, Costume Design, and Production Design. Meanwhile, Say Nothing, based on Patrick Radden Keefe's book and available on Disney+, has received 10 nominations, including Best Drama and Director – Drama.

Beyond these frontrunners, other notable entries include Small Things Like These, starring Cillian Murphy, with nine nominations, and Apple TV's comedy Bad Sisters, with eight nominations. The documentary The Flats, directed by Alessandra Celesia, has also been recognized for its portrayal of life in north Belfast's tower blocks. International productions such as Dune Part Two and The Brutalist will compete for Best International Film, while stars like Denzel Washington and Florence Pugh are contenders for international acting accolades.

In addition to celebrating current talent, the ceremony will honor veteran actor Colm Meaney with the Lifetime Achievement Award. IFTA CEO Áine Moriarty emphasized the significance of this year's nominees, stating that their work exemplifies the excellence of Irish filmmaking and storytelling, resonating with audiences worldwide. This recognition underscores the continued rise of Irish talent on the global stage, highlighting the industry's commitment to quality and innovation.
